Complementing the property’s cool California landscaping, a thoughtfully designed miniature horse stall fits seamlessly into the backyard.

When architect and equestrian Carolyn Adams remodeled her 1955 home in Santa Barbara’s Riviera neighborhood, she wanted to create a true home-away-from-home for Maddie, the family’s miniature horse. The Adams family has owned Maddie for more than 18 years, and at 22 years old, she has become an integral part of the family.

Carolyn designed the compact stable herself, incorporating a single stall with attached storage for feed, tack, and grooming supplies. The whimsical structure is a playful interpretation of classic midcentury modern design, combining concrete block, breeze block, and steel to complement the aesthetic of the residence and landscaping.

Maddie has grazing rights to the small lawn directly outside her stall. Its convenient location allows her to easily step outside for a bit of grazing while remaining close to the stable.

At the lower end of the property, a dedicated paddock gives Maddie space to move freely.
