La Prospera Centro Equestre is a gorgeous facility in Italy. This boarding stable has beautiful stalls that were built with the horse in mind. Read on to learn more about the unique barn set up and thought process behind the creators.
The idea for this equestrian center came from a group of passionate architects and designers who love horses. The ultimate goal was to take the traditional stable and design it with an ethological approach. Oq Horses took the reins and designed this project.
At first glance you might notice there is something different about these stalls. There aren’t any shavings in sight – but that’s not a bad thing. This stable has a healthy design for social horses and makes clean up even easier!
Meals are fed on the on the exterior of the stalls. This allows for less waste and keeps cleaning simple.
Below, an overhead view into the barn shows the spacious stalls and how the stalls are divided. This is the patented “Big Box” design and concept by Oq Horses.
The Big Box is divided into two sections, cushioned rubber mats in the front and sand in the back. The sand is washed and all fine powder is removed so it doesn’t contribute to any respiratory issues or make dust for the horses. Below the sand is a drainage system that allows urine to drain underneath. The urine drains into pavement that is washed away with an automatic water system. The system transports the liquids outside into a specific tank. Stall cleaning as a whole is also so much easier since the manure doesn’t mix with any hay or shavings.
The stalls have an opening in the center where horses have the chance to interact with each other. The metal stalls also allow the horses to see one another and be social in this environment.
For those of you who are wondering, the horses don’t try to walk out of the openings and this is a 100% safe design. It has been tested for years and safety is the number one priority.
Along with having spacious stalls in a social environment, the horses are turned out daily at La Prospera Centro Equestre.
The barn has 12 Big Box stalls along with a tack room and club house. There is also a round pen, indoor and outdoor arena, paddocks, and pastures.
