A once busy tack room is now neatly organized.
Sharon’s tack room in North East England was recently renovated to accommodate her horse loving family’s growing need for a better storage solution for their tack. Both Sharon and her husband David were previously show jumpers. Nowadays her riding time is mainly spent helping keep her three daughters’ ponies and horses fit. Her daughters Sienna, Roberta and Felicity are actively competing in working hunters and show jumping.
The Watts family beautifully transformed their space during lockdown. It was a family project headed up by David and Sharon with help from their oldest daughter, Sienna.
Fresh gray paint was used to freshen up the walls and create a cohesive look throughout the room and the repurposed furniture. Farrow & Ball Elephant’s Breath was used on the walls and Farrow & Ball Mole’s Breath Estate Eggshell was used on the furniture.
Before
Transformation
The granite and sink has been sitting in a barn for many years, it is from an old display kitchen that was purchased many years ago. The gloss grey cupboards are part of a Wren kitchen Sharon bought on Facebook. The upper wall cupboards are from an old kitchen and have been rubbed down and repainted.
The table and leather chairs were imported from Spain about 15 years ago. Sharon’s mother-in-law lives near Alicante. Once in the kitchen, these now live in the tack room.
“The drawers are from our old tack room, my husband had them when he was show jumping on ponies,” Sharon said. “They are approximately forty years old. I got busy with the sander and wood filler and repainted these myself.”
When it comes to keeping a tidy tack room, Sharon offers some advice.
“Have a designated place for everything and try not to have too many ‘random items’ drawers or you will just get cluttered and spend hours looking for things and put things away when you have finished with them (clean!).”
It’s also a good idea to remove things you do not regularly use from the space. Freeing up storage will prevent you from having too much clutter. Store these things in rat proof containers elsewhere. If you can store blankets in another area that will free up a lot of space in a tack room. Keeping a heat source in the winter will also be better for your leather over time.
Wicker baskets that were collected by Sharon have been painted to match the color scheme.
The bit case is a repurposed bookshelf that Sharon has owned since she was a child. It was painted and hooks were installed to store bits. The boot rack was David’s school woodwork project. It’s a bookcase I’ve turned the other way around and repainted.
Thank you Sharon for sharing your renovation on Stable Style. For more tack rooms visit the tack room section.

Wow, this family has more bits than my local tack store! Also fascinating, am I correct in my impression that in Great Britain, first place gets a red ribbon? This project was a real treat to see: A real working equestrian family’s working tack room that they redid themselves, instead of lifestyles of the rich and famous. More of this! Love it!
