The new additions to Coyote Rock Ranch are stunning.
Coyote Rock Ranch is a private 320-acre ranch in Terrebonne, Oregon. This project was completed by Blackburn Architects in 2019. The initial site visit was at the end of 2016. Blackburn Architect’s role included designing a new barn, an indoor arena attached to the barn via an enclosed walkway, lounge/office building and a separate service storage building. The ranch already had some existing barns and structures on the land.
John Blackburn’s largest challenge was making sure he designed large metal structures that fit into the existing farm design, aesthetic and scale – that didn’t look like basic metal prefab structures sitting on the landscape. Designing these large structures to fit into the natural beauty of the site and the existing rustic vernacular was the challenge.

Welcome to Coyote Rock Ranch
The exterior of the barn looks picture perfect, surrounded by nature.
The barn aisle floor features 1 3/4″ interlocking, recycled rubber bricks placed over a concrete slab on top of compacted gravel over compacted pad.
The barn stalls are by Classic Equine and feature 3/4″ thick, non-slip interlocking rubber mats. The mats are placed over 4″ compacted stone dust on top of 4″ compacted gravel. The barn also has a tack room and wash area. There are 17 new stalls, while the property did already have existing barns beforehand.
Lounge Area
This is the cozy barn lounge. There are private residences on the ranch, but they were not design by Blackburn. The new barn structures were designed to have a similar aesthetic to the residence.
Indoor Arena
The indoor arena is 96′ x 112′. Both the arena and barn are constructed of SIPS panels which provides rigid insulation to both buildings.
Here, the arena connects to the barn. It protects the horse and rider from any weather elements as they make their way to the arena.
The ranch is surrounded by open spaces and grows all of its own hay. Hay is stored in a separate existing building that was built specifically for that purpose.
