Tour a stunning, modern horse property in Larkspur, Colorado.
In 2016, Vertical Arts Architecture completed this private horse property. The equestrian complex consists of four buildings – the barn, indoor riding arena, bunk house, plus an additional hay and bedding storage space.
The Vertical Arts team used structural steel and maintenance-free materials on the barn, the owners did not want a typical wooden barn. The color palette and roofing is cohesive with the owner’s home nearby.
The barn features wash and grooming stalls, a hay and bedding stall, tack room, plus a locker room for employees complete with a washer and dryer.
Vertical Arts focused on designing a functional space to ensure optimal ventilation and cleanliness, ensuring a healthy environment for the horses. The courtyard style facility protects the animals from wind and winter elements, it was also inspired by the owner’s Moroccan heritage.
Large garage doors were installed in the barn to allow plenty of ventilation on warm summer days. The installation of an automatic cleaning system for the stalls makes the barn easy to maintain. Feeding is a breeze with built-in water troughs and feeding cubbies.
Additionally, Vertical Arts included a specialized three-step composting system with an aeration mat near the barn.
The fencing in the outdoor runs and indoor arena is by Classic Equine.
The fountain also doubles as a drinking trough for the horses.
The 8-stall barn features Classic Equine stall kits.
The Indoor Arena
The barn is connected to a staging area and heated indoor arena by a drivable breezeway, allowing the horses to stay indoors.
Vertical Arts used Kalwall translucent panels on the top story of the riding arena and barn to allow light in while reducing shadows, glares and bright spots that can spook horses.
The lounge, viewing area and office are attached to the indoor arena. Inside there is a kitchen, bathroom and fireplace.
An arial view of the property. The horse barn and connected indoor arena are on the right. On the left, the bunk house has a bedroom, living room and bathroom. Attached to it is an implement shed and workshop. Additional facilities on the property consist of a composting facility and hay and bedding storage building.
One of the challenges for designing and building this project was the land itself. After some analysis, there were only three to four flat areas large enough for the equestrian buildings. The Vertical Arts team was able to overcome the land’s challenging sloped site by situating the large indoor arena close to a hill, allowing the surrounding land to be graded and flattened for easy accessibility by large vehicles and horse trailers.
The Main Residence
The primary residence sits on a knoll, not far from the equestrian complex. The striking design includes flat roofs, exposed steel beams, concrete form walls and breathtaking window views. More photos of the house can be found online here >
