A private equestrian oasis is surrounded by sprawling hillsides.
This beautiful barn designed by Luke Jones Architects is located in Closeburn, north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. The climate is generally humid and subtropical, with warm to hot temperatures all year. The barn was designed to provide a comfortable, sheltered environment for the horses living in the humid climate, while also contributing to the overall aesthetic appeal of the property for the enjoyment of the animals.
Luke Jones implemented design features including a central courtyard to allow high levels of natural sunlight and airflow, the 8m (approximately 26ft) high roof pitch with perforated wall cladding assists with daylight and ventilation. Luke Jones Architects provided a property masterplan, as well as addressing the landscape design elements associated with the stables, carefully managing the location of the barn relative to the house, the paddocks and the arena.

The barn’s steel shed structure was supplied by Central Steel Build, a company with a track record of providing quality steel structures for equestrian projects. The structure is made of steel, clad with a combination of corrugated iron, weatherboard and natural timber. There are also stone features inside the barn which are carried throughout the landscaping.
The barn has six stalls, a tack room, living quarters, and two cross ties with a Smulders 4 panel solarium and a wash bay.
The beautifully landscaped steps and retaining wall are constructed with massive sandstone blocks from the Yangan Quarry, which is a local Queensland product.
This is the view of the barn and horse property from the house.
For simple, beautiful, and efficient landscaping, quartz gravel is utilized around the barn.
The courtyard facing the arena is a beautiful and functional design element.
Outdoor Arena
The outdoor arena is a 60m x 20m dressage arena, with a Martin Collins wax surface.
The stalls fronts are the Royal Wave stable panels with swing out feeders and privacy partitions supplied by Killahy Equine, manufactured in Europe by Smulders. The barn features an 8-meter-high (approximately 26′) ceiling with individually remote-controlled fans for each stall and the cross ties.
Groom’s Accommodations
The barn also has a modern and tastefully decorated living space with a bedroom/living room and bathroom just steps away from the horses.
Killahy Equine, a leading supplier of high-quality stables to the Australasian market, provided the panels used in this project not only as stable partitions, but also to enclose the tack room and grooms’ accommodations. Additionally, Killahy Equine supplied matching sliding doors for the tack room and grooms’ quarters, as well as external stable windows.
Both the stalls and wash bay use Belmondo Basic Rubber Mats. The mats are designed to handle excess moisture and have shock absorbing properties. Belmondo Rubber mats are designed for horses, made in Germany and supplied by the Australian distributor Killahy Equine.
The Killahy Equine external stables panels are made of galvanized steel frames with thick bamboo timber boards. The high-level external cladding is a perforated corrugated iron cladding, which allows for airflow and daylight while also providing weather protection and economy in the construction.
Thank you to Luke of Luke Jones Architects for sharing this feature with Stable Style.
