Alex Greer Dressage is based out of Alko Equestrian Center in Napa, California. The facility is beautiful, but it also offers a peaceful environment for the horses and riders. Alex found the stunning equestrian center through a close friend and client.
“When I started riding her horse and spending time on the property, I knew it was home. My motto is ‘Horses first, always’ and Alko Equestrian Center fully supports that philosophy,” Alex said. “It is an incredibly welcoming and serene property and the horses are so happy. Alice Alkosser (owner) and Diana Bregman (barn manager) are such lovely people, and everyone involved with the care and management of the property is fantastic.”
A History with Horses
Alex started riding horses at age five. She loved spending time at the barn and grooming just as much as she loved riding. As she became older, Alex assisted around the barn in exchange for additional riding lessons.
“I am so grateful for that time when I was younger because it made me into the professional that I am today. I can’t stress the importance of horse care and truly knowing your horse both in and out of the saddle enough.”
Alex’s passion for dressage is admirable. She thrives on learning and is always picking up new skills and growing along the way. In college, Alex was one of the first team members on the Cornell Dressage Team who competed for her school while simultaneously training her personal horse. Today Alex’s clients range from Training Level to Prix St Georges. She is currently focused on helping her clients achieve their goals and developing her newest addition for the small tour.
The unique property is also home to Shadybrook Estate, the on-site winery. Visitors can soak in the scenic views on the property and enjoy fine estate wines. The environment offers non-equestrians and family members a chance to visit and have a wine tasting experience while their loved ones ride.
Inside the Barn
The newly renovated barn is equipped with automatic Nelson waterers and intake monitors. Non-slip rubber pavers are found throughout the aisles. Security cameras allow the horses to be monitored 24/7. The facility’s clean and well-planned aesthetic has created a successful environment for Alex and the horses.
The barn has 28 stalls. The stall fronts and mattress systems are from Saratoga Stalls. Regular sized stalls are 12.5′ x 12.5′ and the corner stalls are 12′ x 16′. The stalls also offer attached paddocks for extra space.
Riding Arena
Alex firmly believes a thoughtfully planned facility is essential for the horse and rider team to succeed as athletes together. The arena has a full-length wall of mirrors and Olympia footing installed by Tony Judge.
It’s no surprise that the indoor arena is Alex’s number one spot in the barn.
“The arena is my favorite part of the barn. The way that the sun cascades into the arena with the view of the vineyards in the background is just heavenly. It also has incredible lighting and ventilation.”
When she’s not in the area, Alex takes time to enjoy the trails on the property.
“The groomed trails throughout the vineyard allow me to incorporate hill work and diversify the horses’ training programs. We also have a weekly cavaletti day and have beautiful custom-made wooden cavalettis available for our use.”
