A 22-stall breeding barn has sheltered mares and foals for generations, carrying the marks of time, daily use and operations. When American Stalls first arrived on site over a year ago, the barn revealed its age—creaking timbers, uneven openings, and a patina shaped by decades of daily care. Yet beneath that history was unmistakable potential. The owners envisioned a space that could be both respectfully preserved and thoughtfully renewed.

Timeless equestrian design elements are found throughout the property, including a copper horse weathervane.

Interior Details

The goal for the renovation was for the barn to breathe, feel open, healthy, and attuned to the horses it serves.

Unlike new construction, historic barns carry complexity in every detail. Here, no two stall openings, doors, or windows were the same size. Countless measurements had to ensure everything new would fit perfectly.

Perhaps the most beautiful visual element of the renovation is the Brazilian hardwood, often called “tigerwood” for its naturally rich striping. Here, the hardwood is woven throughout the barn—on sliding stall fronts, framing doorways, warming partitions, and adding quiet depth to the ceilings. Its presence elevates the space without ever demanding attention.

Beyond aesthetics, the material was chosen for resilience. Its density makes it exceptionally resistant to moisture and rot, ideal for equestrian environments where durability is non-negotiable.

Lighting throughout the barn was thoughtfully recalibrated to promote clarity and calm, while airflow was improved with strategically placed stall fans to keep the interior fresh and comfortable across seasons.

Breeding barns hold higher architectural expectations: they must serve the instinctive needs of mares and allow handlers to work safely, calmly, and with assurance.

Beneath the horses, wellbeing remained a priority, stall mattresses and rubber pavers offer traction, cushioning, and long-term comfort—especially important in a breeding environment where horses spend extended time in their stalls.

Taller grill spacing at the stall fronts was intentionally chosen to create a greater sense of openness, reducing anxiety while maintaining safety.

A gorgeous stone fountain adds more character to the restored grounds.

The Dutch doors and barn windows were redesigned with glass panels to welcome abundant natural light—essential for supporting the mares and an important factor in biosecurity practices.
