Tour a Spacious H-Shaped Barn in England

An 8-stall barn was designed with space in mind.

Stable Style charming barn tour

This carefully planned horse barn is located in Somerset, a historic county in South West England. The unique H-shaped barn project by Scotts of Thrapston is filled with thoughtful details, making it functional and grand. The construction of the barn started in November of 2015 and it was completed in 2016.

The process of building and designing a new barn always presents a new challenge. This property wasn’t close to the Scotts factory where the buildings are manufactured. Deliveries and installation had to be planned out efficiently. The Scotts team closely coordinated meetings with all parties involved to go over ever detail. For such a large barn, this was a huge undertaking.

Scotts of Thrapston worked with the yard owners to create a roomy barn that allowed plenty of covered space to work with the horses in all weather elements.

The H-shaped barn was designed to give the appearance of a smaller yard on the exterior. But inside the barn has a huge spacious interior that was influenced by American horse barn design.

The exterior aesthetic complements the property and matches the other outbuildings.

Charming horse barn

The barn exterior features Siberian larch cladding with stone facings to match the surrounding buildings on the estate. The pitch trussed rafter roof is topped with real slate tiles.

The wash area is centrally located in the middle of the H. This barn shape fully optimizes the available covered space. Due to the frequent rain, wash and grooming spaces must be covered.

The wash area has a groom’s office on one side and rug room on the other.

Down the barn aisle

There are eight 12’x12′ stalls in two groups of four located in separate aisles.

There is a corner stall at the end of each aisle.

Freshly cleaned stall filled with hay

White faced plywood ceilings throughout the barn allows the barn to feel bright and spacious, even on a rainy day.

Comfy stall with bedding

Each stall offers the horse an exterior and aisle view. Dutch doors allow the horse to be taken from the stall directly outside. On a rainy day, they can walk through the aisle to the cross ties.
