Patrick Husting is the proud owner of this Olympic 48 Gable Horse Barn by Barn Pros. Patrick grew up on a farm in Minnesota, where his interest for horses was first sparked. Fast-forward through the years, a thriving career in the tech and app world brought Patrick to Seattle. After selling his last company, a non-compete clause prevented him from working for the next two years. It was then that Patrick’s wife mentioned she wanted to build a new home and move. While the thought of building a new place wasn’t immediately thrilling, that was when Patrick decided to build a barn and get horses.

A Dream Barn

Barn Pros is located near Seattle and Patrick immediately decided to use them for his project. He refers to Barn Pros as the “Nordstrom of barns” – the stylish design options are top-of-the-line and exciting.

The couple built their ranch in Sammamish, Washington where they bought an old horse boarding property. They tore down the existing barn and house, eager to the design the home and barn of their dreams.

After becoming a horse owner, Patrick was soon reminded how much work goes into owning horses. There are a lot of care and training details that need to be documented.  Since app building was something he could do with ease, he created his own to track vet visits, the farrier, and his son’s classes at horse shows. Soon after building this app, horse show moms started peering over Patrick’s shoulders, asking about the app – they wanted it! In 2018 Patrick rebuilt and released The Equestrian App. By the end of the year, the app had 3,800 users. Currently there are 5,500 (and growing) users across the globe, including a camel racing facility in the Middle East using the technology.

Patrick’s 36’x48’ pre-engineered barn features six stalls with Classic Equine’s Legend stall fronts and dutch doors, a wash stall package with matts, lights, heaters, over the top wash wand and cross ties, archtop breezeway doors with windows, 6’ gable style roof dormers, and a lighthouse cupola to bring in natural light.

The exterior features contrasting Cedar and Douglas Fir siding that makes a beautiful statement.

One of Patrick’s favorite features about his barn is the open design concept that’s revealed when you first step inside the space. The stunning design draws your eyes up towards the beautiful chandeliers from build.com.

Working with Barn Pros was a smooth and easy process for Patrick. The plans were done quickly and any changes made were returned right away. It took about a year for the entire barn and home to be built, with crews alternating between working on the barn and the house. One of the biggest hold ups was waiting on permits and the barn construction only took about three months.

When Patrick asked other barn owners about the challenging parts about having their own barn – manure removal and composting was at the top of their list. Barn Pros built a dedicated compost area and installed an aerated O2Compost system. This amazing system takes a six to nine month compost process down to 30 days.

Patrick likes to call this his #smartbarn and himself a #barngeek.

“I have 6 cameras setup so I know who’s in the barn, video being records of the training in the arena and what the horses are doing in their stalls and pastures along with watching out for people that should be out there. Temperatures are controlled in the washroom and tack rooms keeping them warm when we are typically in the barn.  All lighting is also controllable via Control4 via LCD panels in the home or on his mobile devices and are set to automatically come on at feeding times and sunset.”

Even the individual stalls are equipped with iFEED’s automatic feed dispenser system providing a natural slow feeding experience to the horses.
